The Episcopal General Assembly of Colonial North Carolina originally constituted St. Matthew's Parish in 1752 as the established church in the County of Orange. The parish was reorganized in 1824 and the present building was consecrated on May 21, 1826. The church is still active and the old sanctuary is still in use today.
