Wat Mai Play Hoi is a Buddhist temple in a rural area of Phichit Province, in northern Thailand. The wat has a number of waymarks and interesting items to see. One of these is a large statue of the Buddha located at the rear of the temple grounds. This statue was still under construction in March 2012, though its shape and size can be discerned. I would estimate the statue to be 20m high. When it is complete I am sure that it will be gold in colour, and quite a sight.
Entry to the temple is free, though a small donation is always the done thing to do. Public bus routes travel in the vicinity of the temple, but if you are relying on public transport expect a walk.
The Buddha is the founder and principal figure in the Buddhist faith. He lived during the sixth centre BCE, beginning life as an Indian prince, but then turned from a life or power and ease, to seek enlightenment. The Buddhist belief system centres around the teachings of the Buddha and the Buddhist community, and includes a belief in reincarnation. There are approximately 500 million Buddhists, and, while present in virtually every country, its practitioners are most likely to be found in India and east Asia.
