Crocodiles may seem a strange creature with which to welcome visitors to a city (at least to me), however, there is a popular local legend concerning crocs, which is a hallmark of the province of Phichit, and thusly a visitor will find crocodile statues throughout the city and province.
There are numerous versions of this story, however, they all share these common elements: pretty girl, brave hero, girl captured by evil supernatural (and curiously anthropomorphic) crocodile who falls in love with the girl, fisticuffs, and happy ending.
The province is also, perhaps not surprisingly, famous for its croc farms, and also, perhaps not surprisingly, known throughout the Kingdom for its crocodile jokes.
These anthropomorphic crocodiles, father, mother, and son, stand facing north at the intersection of a major highway (117 -> 115), and the turn off to Phichit town. The sign says "Welcome to Phichit".
