Þingvellir is one of the most frequently visited tourist sites in Iceland.
The site is well known for historic and for geographic reasons. It was the site of the First Parliament that took place here between 930 and 1798.
It is also one of the places where you can literally walk inside the drift separating the two tectonic plates, the Eurasian one and the North American one.
There is a river, Öxará River, crossing the site and going to the lake Þingvallavatn.
With a surface of 84 km² it is the largest natural lake in Iceland. Its greatest depth is at 114 m. The lake is part of the Þingvellir National Park.
The volcanic origin of the islands in the lake is clearly visible. The only outflow from lake Þingvallavatn is the Sog River.
