The church was built in 1839 on site of an earlier 18th century church, destroyed by the earthquake of 1838. In 1904-1907 it was enlarged and rebuilt by design of architect Dimitrie Maimarolu.

In November 2002, relics of St. Sylvester were transferred to this church from Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.

The Romanian wikipedia page has more information on the history than the official church site.
