The construction of the 35th Coastal Battery begun in 1913, intending to establish the most powerful defense fortification of the huge naval base of Sevastopol.
In 1913 works came to a stop and were resumed in 1924. The guns were two 305 mm twin towers, with shells of 471 kg, able to hit targets as far as 42 km.
They saw intensive action during the Second World War, when the Germans set a siege to Sevastopol which took almost two years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Sevastopol_%281941%E2%80%931942%29).
The battery was severely damaged by then and stayed in a state of ruin until very recently, when a museum was open on the grounds. Today a visitor can wander around, visiting the exhibit, looking at the several monuments built there and observing the little which remained from the original emplacements.
