On Sovereign Boulevard, part of the A2, the old road from London to Dover (before motorways were built). there is a memorial to Will Adams, born in Gillingham on September 24th 1564. He became a key advisor to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and built for him Japan's first Western-style ships. He died in Japan in 1620.
This memorial, complete with a clock tower was built by public donation and was opened in 1934. The clock tower has four clocks on it facing North, South, East and West. The clock faces are about a foot in diameter and uses Roman numerals.
