When Romanian government was retreating from Bucharest to the temporary capital in Iasi, units of Romanian cavalry were holding the German and Austro-Hungarian troops advancing from the north. The last fight took place in Baneasa and after WW I, a memorial has been built to Sgt. Nicolae Paianu - "the last defender of the capital". The memorial has been designed by French architect Ernest Doneaud.
There is a stone obelisk, decorated at the base, with a bronze plaque reading "Ultimul strajer al Capitalei" (the last defender of the capital). At the side there is a bronze crest of Bucharest.
When the memorial was relocated in 2007 because of road construction, parts of uniform, coffin, and bones were found.
