This pub was once called The Dolphin. There was a name change in 1967.
Nellie Dean is a fictional character from a once popular music hall song, '(You're My Heart's Desire, I Love You) Nellie Dean'. Nowadays, most people will be familiar with the line 'There's an old mill by a stream, Nellie Dean', the first line of the chorus, but little else.
The song was published in 1905 and was written by Henry W Armstrong, an American boxer, booking agent, producer, singer, pianist and composer.
The name of the pub and the address share no historical connection.
