The tree was formerly in the Termeil State Forest but a section of land surrounding the tree was handed over to the National Parks to ensure its preservation.

The National Register of Big Trees (visit link) gives the measurements of Old Blotchy. The register uses the same techniques as the Native Tree Society U.S.A. The tree's crown is 98 feet above its base & as with gum trees, there are no lower branches.

Old Blotchy is accessed via a four wheel drive track named 18 Mile Peg Road which branches off the Princes Highway just after passing through the locality of Termeil. The turn off is well sign posted & it is only about 5 minutes drive to the parking area.

There is a well worn, easy grade walking track leading off from the car park which passes through thick scrub & it is only when you emerge that this amazing tree towers above you.

The tallest Spotted Gum (Big Spotty) is about 7 kilometres (4 miles) to the west but its location is not public knowledge.
