Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazu) was the ruler of Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia in 1593–1601.
His equestrian statue was placed at Bucharest University in 1874. At that time, Romania was still under Ottoman rule, and it was quite a struggle to erect a monument to a fighter agains Ottomans. After nine months of negotiation, the monument was unveiled on November 8, 1874. It was the first equestrian statue and second public monument in Bucharest.
