This stone hitching post sits just south of the Historic Carthage Jail. This Jail is where, on June 27, 1844, the Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Joseph Smith, and his brother, Hyrum Smith were murdered by a mob, while they were being held inside the jail. It is situated on the north side of Walnut Street, just east of Fayette Street, in downtown Carthage, Illinois.
