The latest in the series of Rock Rapids murals has just been completed. I stumbled across this work of art while driving through town a few weeks ago. At that time it was in the process of being painted, and I checked it once more before it was done. The mural, painted by Michigan artist Matt Sharum, depicts World War I soldiers coming home from war. “Homecoming” measures 44’ long and 20’ high at a cost of $18,000. It is located on the corner of South Story Street and First Avenue on the west wall of Simply Said. The mural is appropriately located a few blocks south of the RR depot.
The Rock Rapids Mural Society was started in 2002 as a way to preserve the town’s history. A total of 25 murals enhance the sides of buildings and highlight earlier period events and community figures. It is a wonderful way to preserve the stories of their past and share them with others every day of the year.
