The district, centered along Main Street, contains 80 buildings, including 49 contributing buildings and 3 listed as individual buildings on the National Register. Most were built in the first half of the 20th century. A number of them appear to be undergoing renovation.
This is a commercial district and most of the buildings reflect that in their architectural style. The majority are of the Commercial style, but also include Modern, Italianate and Art Decco among others. There is also a Hays Downtown Walking Tour brochure that gives the history of some of the buildings in the downtown area including many that are no longer standing.
The area is easily walked and there is adequate parking, including on street parking along Main Street. Co-ordinates for the Chestnut Historical District were taken at the corner of 7th Street and Main near the County Historical Society headquarters.
