Buddha on the Ocean—Sattahip, Thailand - Statues of Religious Figures on Waymarking.com

This small statue of the Buddha is on the sea shore, in the town of Sattahip, in south eastern Thailand. Sattahip has a long history as a fishing town, and is a major Royal Thai Naval base. I was told by locals that this Buddha, essentially, blesses or watches over those who go to sea. As the sea is a difficult mistress, this is understandable. The Buddha is elevated on a raised platform, and somewhat surprisingly (to me) faces inward to the land, not outward to the sea. The statue is small, maybe 1/2 a metre high.


The Buddha is the founder and principal figure in the Buddhist faith. He lived during the sixth centre BCE, beginning life as an Indian prince, but then turned from a life or power and ease, to seek enlightenment. The Buddhist belief system centres around the teachings of the Buddha and the Buddhist community, and includes a belief in reincarnation. There are approximately 500 million Buddhists, and, while present in virtually every country, its practitioners are most likely to be found in India and east Asia.
