On the northeast corner of 9th Street and Jim Thorpe Blvd. (formerly Broadway), in downtown Prague is a beautiful building in light-colored brick. This is a two-story building, with arched windows and a decorative stepped parapet at the west facing facade.
The building has changed a little over the years. The earlier caps to the columns along the south side which projected beyond the roof line have been removed, and the dentil cornice at the front has been altered to form the stepped parapet. Originally the building had multi-colored brick which accentuated the arched lintels. The beltcourse separating the first and second floors at the facade remains the same.
The building has an entrance at the southwest corner with the ground floor recessed, supported by an Ionic column. This has remained over the years.
The building was constructed as the Prague National Bank which was established in April 1906, and the historic photo (found in the Prague Historical Museum) appears to have been taken in the 1920s. The building is currently occupied by an attorney's office on the ground floor, and appears to be vacant on the second floor.
This is a terrific example of early Territorial construction and vision for the future.
