Located in the wall close to the entrance to Great St. Mary's Church in Cambridge, this plaque commemorates the work of William Warren.
The plaque marks the datum point of the first milestone erected in Great Britain since the Romans left. The new milestones were erected from Cambridge to London by William Warren in 1725.
The text on the plaque reads:
THIS DISK
marks the datum point
from which in 1725 William Warren,
Fellow of Trinity Hall, began to measure
the one mile points along the roads from
Cambridge at which were then set up
the first true milestones in Britain
since Roman times.
The area around the plaque and church is a popular tourist spot and it can be difficult to get a clear view of the plaque.
