Trevena or Trevillet Cross, Tintagel - posted by bluesnote

The cross was found in use as a gatepost at Trevillet Farm and was removed to the front garden of ther Wharncliffe Arms in 1875. Although badly damaged, the cross is still of interest because of the inscriptions. There are also additional features of interest, such as the five raised bosses, which are said to denote Christ's five wounds received at the cricifiction. There is also a central boss between the limbs, with an additional boss on each limb.
The inscriptions read:
ALNAT FECIT HA(N) CRUCEM P(RO) A(N) IMA SU (A). Which translates as "Aelnat made this cross for ther benefit of his soul".
On the reverse face are inscribed the names of the four evangelists; Matthew, Mark Luke and John - MATHEUS MARCVS LUCA SIOh. The inscriptions are in Anglo Saxon capitals and miniscules.
the stone was cut from a piece of grey elvan stone, a form of locally quarried greenstone.
