Originally built as 'Deep River Church' in the late 1890s, it served a town built on pilings over marshy ground of a tidal estuary. The church itself was built on a low rocky outcrop of a nearby hill, and it and the cemetery uphill are all that survives of the town. So the nearest large population center is more than 15 miles away.
