This point is the boundary between the two northern provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang. The road (the only road) is National Highway 13, a long and winding, and bumpy road (if you are prone to motion sickness, you might want to fly). The crossing is marked by a sign welcoming travellers into the province, and highlighting the town of Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang town is the capital and principal city of the province of the same name. It is a pleasant spot. A World Heritage site—due to its interesting history—and a destination for backpackers and similar young riffraff, due to the comfortable and inexpensive surrounds.

Oudomxay Province is largely dependent on subsistence agriculture, a tiny export market for cash crops and a small amount of tourism.

The region consists of steep hills, few roads, and lots of jungle.
