The Douglas Avenue School was built in 1927 on the foundations of a previous school building which had been gutted by fire. The building in a Spanish Colonial Revival style with Beaux Arts influences was designed by John Gaw Meem when he was in partnership with Cassius McCormick, this was one of Meem's earliest projects. The building was constructed by the construction firm of M.M. Sundt, a widely known construction company in the area. The three-story brick school building has cast stone details which were supplied by the Northwest Terra Cotta Company of Chicago and Denver. The building features a red tile roof.

The building appears to be in very good condition and has received an addition at sometime. The building continues to serve as an active elementary school building thus it is best to visit while class is not in session.
