The Johnsen Mortuary was started by J.C. Johnsen in 1905. He was a leading merchant and mortician in Las Vegas until his death in 1920. He operated his furniture store and mortuary a block east. After his death his son, Thomas Johnsen, took over the business and decided to a separate mortuary and had this building constructed in 1926. The two story brick building is in a Romanesque style. It features arched entrances and windows and a metal roof. The building was built M.M. Sundt, a leading building contractor in Las Vegas in the era.
The building is in very good condition and continues to serve as a mortuary with part of the building converted to offices and appartments.
