A large horizontal sundial on the Village Commons in Front Royal, Virginia next to the Warren County Visitor's Center was built to celebrate the beginning of the 21st century. A plaque reads:
THE MILLENNIUM SUNDIAL
FRONT ROYAL - CANOE CAPITAL OF VIRGINIA
INSTALLED DECEMBER 1999 TO COMMEMORATE
THE END OF THE 1900'S. DEDICATED ON JANUARY 1, 2001[sic]
TO HONOR THE BEGINNING OF THE 21ST CENTURY
DESIGNED BY PATRICIA WINDROW - WILLIAM DEVLIN - EVA DEVLIN
The sundial was made possible through community contributions.
The gnonom is a silhouette of a Native American paddling a canoe. Front Royal sits in the Shenandoah Valley next to the Shenandoah River.
