This welcome sign has an outline of a scarecrow in a field, slight pink on the blue background with white lettering. The symbol of the city of Gongju, of which it is officially a part of, is in the upper left corner. Gongju is known as the center of the old Baekjae Kingdom.
There are many acres of chestnut farms in this rural village near the city of Gongju, Korea. This area accounts for about 12% of the chestnut production in the country. There is an annual Chestnut Festival here in the fall.
Also by this sign are several sets of large scarecrows, and a couple of carved wooden totems, a traditional shamanistic element placed at the entrance to a village or other place. Across the road is a map of the area. (See photo gallery for these).
