Matterdale Church is a simple Lakeland church with little ornamentation, except for the window at the East end. The window was designed by Charles Kempe (1837-1907), a renowned Victorian stained glass designer. Kempe perfected the technique of using silver stain on glass, which dries to give a yellow hue to the glass. The theme of the window is The world as made flesh.
