Matterdale was originally part of the parish of Greystoke. In 1566 the people of Matterdale petitioned for a church. The church was probably completed by 1573, as witnessed by carving MDXXXX/XXIII LPIALWPI/W on the underside of a roof beam.
The church is of simple construction in stone. A simple nave with West tower and South porch. The tower has diagonal buttresses and a pitched roof between stepped gables. The interior of the church is of simple design, with plain windows, except for a stained glass east window by Charles Kempe. Large roof trusses are visible on the inside of the building.
