North American F-86L Sabre - TAM, Travis AFB, Fairfield, CA - Static Aircraft Displays on Waymarking.com

Built by North American Aviation as a radar guided, rocket armed, all-weather fighter-interceptor derived from the F-86 'Sabre' of Korean War fame. Originally designated F-86D, the aircraft underwent modifications to upgrade the original radar/fire control systems to provide data-link capability between the aircraft and ground controllers, eliminating the use of vocal instructions during intercept missions. New wing slats and an increase in wing span of 2ft improved performance of the F-86L over the F-86D.

USAF s/n 53-0704 was built as an F-86D-55-NA by North American Aviation in Inglewood, CA, and in 1954 was assigned to the 413th FIS, Travis AFB, CA; sent to Fresno, CA, for modification to an F-86L in 1957; in 1962 assigned to the New Jersey Air National Guard, 108th TFW, McGuire AFB, NJ. By 1963 she was retired.
