"The present church of St. Torcato on the outskirts of Guimarães, is the product of several building phases over almost four centuries (X-XIII). The general appearance of the temple dates from this latter period, more specifically a Romanesque construction phase, also dated from the first half of the twelfth century. It is known that D Afonso Henriques donated the temple to the Canons of St. Augustine in 1132 and that the head was sacred by the Archbishop of Braga, D. Palo Mendes. This campaign, however, by its rapidity and by the abundant material reuse pre-Romanesque, seems to have been a mere reform of the previous building, which favored elements such as the triumphal arch, the windows and the cornice line, but he held, generally, the century structure X."
