Florida's flag, adopted in 1899, represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers and lakes. The seal features the sun, a cabbage palmetto tree, a sailing steamboat and a Native American Seminole woman scattering flowers. The state nickname of "Sunshine State" was officially adopted by the 1970 Legislature.
This sign depicts two of the features associated with Florida. The "o" in the state name on the sign is the shape of the state imposed on the sun with palms on the bottom of the sign.
