The sign is on US33 westbound (probably another on other side for oncoming traffic) just before it heads under the Skyline Drive. Highway US33 was preceded by the Swift Run Gap Turnpike, which was a privately owned toll road constructed in the early 19th century. In a VDOT publication, it relates that the Virginia General Assembly appropriated £100 around 1748 to improve the crossings of the Blue Ridge at Swift Run Gap. The sum would now be equivalent to around $15,000.
