Produced by McDonnell Aircraft Co, the F-101 was the first fighter capable of over 1,000 mph in level flight. Originally designed as a long range escort fighter, it was produced in two configurations: air defense fighter (F-101) and reconnaissance (RF-101). The F-101B first flew on 27 March 1957.

USAF s/n 57-0427 is an F-101B-100-MC, one of 407 F-101Bs built by McDonnell Aircraft in St Louis, MO. It was delivered to the USAF on 29 February 1960 and assigned to the 52nd Fighter Group (ADC) Suffolk County AFB, NY. In November 1969 it was transferred to the 101st Fighter Group (ANG), Dow AFB, ME, and then in August 1978 to the 147th Fighter Interceptor Group (ANG), Ellington AFB, TX. It was flown to the museum on 5 May 1982.
