The West Indies Comapany, Ltd. is descendant from the Dutch West India Company; which was established in St Thomas in 1657 and was instrumental in the Dutch colonization of the Americas. In 1671, the Danish West India Company received its charter from King Christian V. There mission was to take possession of St. Thomas and neighboring islands that are uninhabited and suitable for plantations. In 1733, the Danish government took control of St. Thomas from the Dutch West India Company. The company maintained responsibility for operating the port at Charlotte Amalie. In 1917, St Thomas and the other Danish West Indies islands was bought by the United States and the old Danish West India Company continued operation as a private company - West Indies Company, Ltd. - who act as ship agents providing services for cruise lines that visit the St. Thomas cruise port.
Visitors to St. Thomas are greeted with this nautical display of anchors as they disembark cruise ships in the port of Charlotte Amalie. Three admiralty anchors are arranged in a triangle with their crowns on the ground and one end of the stock balanced on a platform. Above the bell are the letters WICo (West Indies Company). A black pedestal holding a ships bell is inscribed, in gold, with the date 1912. Below is the number 4000 and a monogram US.
