It is easy to miss this lion whilst looking at other architectural features around the entrance to the Tate Britain. The lion is on a plinth to the left side of Britannia above the pediment. The lion, probably carved from Portland stone, has its back towards Britannia. It is sitting on its haunches with its front left leg planted on the ground. The paw, of the front right leg, rests on top of a shield that appears to have lions carved on it. The tail is resting alongside the rear left leg. The lion's head is turned to the left and is looking towards the river.
The original building was designed by Sidney R J Smith in 1897.
