Un buste de bronze de Christoforo Colombo exécuté par l’artiste Armando Del Pama datée de 1992. Le buste repose sur un obélisque de granite noir d’environ 8 pieds . Ce buste a été installé pour la commémoration du 500e anniversaire de l’exploration des terres d’Amérique par ce grand navigateur Génois.
Historique.
"Christophe Colomb (en italien, Cristoforo Colombo) (né entre le 25 août et le 31 octobre 1451 à Gênes, dans la République de Gênes, et mort le 20 mai 1506 à Valladolid, en Espagne) est un navigateur italien de la fin du XVe et du début du XVIe siècle au service des rois catholiques espagnols Isabelle de Castille et Ferdinand d'Aragon.
Christophe Colomb est la première personne de l'histoire moderne à traverser l'océan Atlantique et, en cherchant une nouvelle route vers les Indes, il découvre une route aller-retour entre le continent américain et l'Europe.
Il effectue en tout quatre voyages en tant que navigateur pour le compte des souverains espagnols, qui le nomment avant son premier départ amiral, vice-roi des Indes et gouverneur général des territoires qu'il découvrirait. La découverte de l'espace caraïbe marque le début de la colonisation de l'Amérique par les Européens et fait de Colomb un acteur majeur des grandes découvertes des XVe siècle et XVIe siècle. Son premier voyage est considéré comme la rupture majeure entre le Moyen Âge et les temps modernes dans l'historiographie de la civilisation occidentale.
Même si des fouilles archéologiques conduites en 1960 dans la province actuelle de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, au lieu-dit de L'Anse aux Meadows, ont établi que les Vikings avaient brièvement installé une colonie en Amérique du Nord, à la pointe septentrionale de l'île de Terre-Neuve vers l'an mil, Colomb est aujourd'hui universellement reconnu comme le premier Européen qui a « découvert l'Amérique », où il accoste pour la première fois dans la nuit du 11 au 12 octobre 1492. Il meurt en relative disgrâce, ses prérogatives sur les terres découvertes étant contestées, toujours persuadé d'avoir atteint les Indes, le but originel de son expédition.
Les historiens dressent le portrait d'un marin hors pair, « un des meilleurs navigateurs de tous les temps , ou même « le plus grand marin de tous les temps , mais « piètre politicien ». Il apparaît « comme un homme de grande foi, profondément attaché à ses convictions, pénétré de religiosité, acharné à défendre et à exalter le christianisme partout."

"Christopher Columbus (unknown; before 31 October 1451 – 20 May 1506) was an explorer, colonizer, and navigator, born in the Republic of Genoa, in what is today northwestern Italy. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. Those voyages, and his efforts to establish permanent settlements in the island of Hispaniola, initiated the process of Spanish colonization, which foreshadowed the general European colonization of the "New World".
In the context of emerging western imperialism and economic competition between European kingdoms seeking wealth through the establishment of trade routes and colonies, Columbus's speculative proposal to reach the East Indies by sailing westward received the support of the Spanish crown, which saw in it a promise, however remote, of gaining the upper hand over rival powers in the contest for the lucrative spice trade with Asia. During his first voyage in 1492, instead of reaching Japan as he had intended, Columbus landed in the Bahamas archipelago, at a locale he named San Salvador. Over the course of three more voyages, Columbus visited the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as the Caribbean coast of Central America and Venezuela, claiming them for the Spanish Empire.
Though Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas (having been preceded by the Norse expedition led by Leif Ericso, Columbus's voyages led to the first lasting European contact with America, inaugurating a period of European exploration and colonization of foreign lands that lasted for several centuries. They had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of the spreading of the Christian religion.
Never admitting that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans, rather than the East Indies he had set out for, Columbus called the inhabitants of the lands he visited indios (Spanish for "Indians"). Columbus's strained relationship with the Spanish crown and its appointed colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and dismissal as governor of the settlements in Hispaniola in 1500, and later to protracted litigation over the benefits which Columbus and his heirs claimed were owed to them by the crown."
