This American Legion Post is named for Emil Gurwell, local man who was drafted in September 1918, but passed away in Camp Grant, Illinois, a few months later

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Gurwell and was married to Emma Hebener.

The Post came into existance in 1925 and purchased a building, which was remodeled into a dance hall, and used for many community gatherings.

In 1941, the seller of the building died, and the post was not able to pay the balance off and gave back the building to the seller's estate.

For several years, the Post was inactive due to the small number of men available to join. In the early 1940s, fire destroyed all post records, including the charter.

In 1944, the Post took on new energy and purchased a lot. After WW2, the post was awarded the headquarters building of a nearby CCC Camp and the building was moved to its present location.

For a smaller post, the membership is active with many Legion programs and has an active Auxiliary unit.

Located in Butte County, on US 212, just east of Belle Fourche, Nisland has a population of 206, as of July 2009, showing a 1% increase in population from the 2000 census.

German, English, Norwegian, Polish, Scottish, and Irish immigrants settled the area and later formed the town.

Nisland was platted in 1909 when the railroad arrived in the area. It was named for a prominent early settler, Nis Sorenson, who donated the land for the town
