Standing in front of St Peter's Church, in Market Street, is the Sandwich Civic War Memorial. It was built by local builder,and WW1 veteran, Mr Henry Barlow. The prominent bronze relief was the work of Kent born artist, Charles Leonard Hartwell R.A., F.R.B.S, R.B.C. (1873-1951).

The memorial was unveiled on 29th November 1920 to a large crowd by the then Mayor of Sandwich and Speaker of the Cinque Ports Confederation, Alderman George Christopher Solley, J.P. (1869-1941)
