While the town of Mountain Pass has not visibly grown, the adjacent open pit mine has expanded tremendously. Now there are several hundred personal vehicles at the mine every day.

The discrepancy between the posted elevation and the GPS elevation is due to the fact that the sign is one mile below the town on a fairly steep grade.
