George Gordon's father, John George Gordon moved to Maryland and married Mary (or Sarah) Chapman in 1727 Sarah Chapman was the niece of wealthy Dr. James Chapman and he opposed the marriage. John George Gordon was rather poor and Sarah's family was evidently at the opposite end of the financial spectrum.
The couple eloped and moved to Spotsylvania County, Virginia near Fredericksburg where their two sons, Charles and George were born. John George Gordon died 1767 in Virginia and his widow and two sons Charles and George moved to Wilkes County in 1770.
George Gordon married Sarah Herndon and the couple had three children (Charles, Jr., Nathaniel and Chapman.)
During the Revolutionary War, George Gordon was a Member of Lenoir’s Rangers.
After the War, George returned to Wilkes County and lived out the remainder of his years. He died in 1800 and is buried in the St. Paul Episcopal Church Cemetery in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
