Im frühen 14. Jahrhundert wurde in der Haller Au ein Kruzifix angeschwemmt und geborgen, nachdem es drei mal von den Wellen zurückgestoßen wurde. Dem Unglück entgangen, wurde das Kreuz in Gampas aufgerichtet und verehrt. Wenn es sich selbst helfen konnte, muss es auch anderen helfen können.

Eine Kapelle wurde für den Kreuzbalken errichtet und von Päpsten und Bischöfen mit Nachsicht und Ablässen begnadigt. Menschen kamen nicht nur aus der näheren Umgebung, sondern auch von weither. So wurde Gampas zu einem beliebten Wallfahrtsort.

Durch den wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung aus dem Ziegelverkauf, der bis zum 19. Jahrhundert betrieben wurde, (man erkennt heute noch westlich des Ortes Mulden, die an abgebaute Lehmlager erinnern) begannen Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts Vergrößerungs- und Verschönerungsarbeiten der Kirche.
Äußerlich gab es bis heute kaum eine Veränderung, innen jedoch erlitt sie doch einige Umgestaltungen, die aber den einheitlichen gotischen Charakter nicht zerstörten.
Etwas vom schönsten der Kirche ist wohl auch das spätgotische Kruzifix (befand sich vorher in der 1840 abgetragenen Veitskapelle am Haller Friedhof). Das nach einer alten Datierung 1498 geschaffene Bildhauerkunstwerk, stellt eine höchst wertvolle Arbeit dar, deren realistische Wirkung durch das mit dunklem Naturhaar bedeckte Haupt gesteigert wird.

Auch eine „Heiligkreuzer Bruderschaft“ der zahlreichen Gläubigen war hier gegründet worden. Zwei Bruderschaftsbücher existieren heute noch, in denen regelmäßig monatliche Konvente, über Neuaufnahmen und Sterbefälle von Mitgliedern berichten.
Auch das berühmte Opferbild des Kaisers Leopold, seiner Ehefrau Claudia Felizitas und deren schwer erkrankten ersten Tochter Anna Maria Josepha, ist nichts anderes als eine Stiftung des Kaiserpaares an die Bruderschaft.
