S48 is the eastern-most water control structure on the C-23 canal aka County Line Canal (along the border of Martin and St. Lucie counties). The spillway helps maintain upstream water levels and prevent saltwater intrusion from the brackish St. Lucie River to the east.
A shellrock parking area is available along Murphy Road at the SW corner of the bridge over the canal. A small fishing pier is located just east of the spillway and accessed from this same parking area.
