Fort Defiance was the home of General William Lenoir, who was a general in the North Carolina Militia, and fought at the Battle of King's Mountain during the American Revolution. General Lenoir built the original fort, which was known as Fort Defiance, to protect against the Cherokees Indians. In 1788 he built his new home and named it Fort Defiance in remembrance of his original fort.

Today, the home is preserved as a museum and is open to the public. The home has a number of original artifacts and furniture on display. There are several generations of the Lenoir Family buried in the cemetery adjacent to the home.

This historical marker stands at the intersection of North Carolina Route 268 and Buffalo Cove Road in Caldwell County and is located about 3-miles from the Fort Defiance Historical Site.
