This is the only building remaning from the Monterey Presidio.
The Church of San Carlos de Borromeo was dedicated on June 3, 1770 with Father Junipero Serra's (visit link) first mass (visit link) in Monterey.
The first chapel at the presidio site was made of brush of palisades. It was later replaced by an adobe chapel which burned down with most of the presidio in 1789.
The current chapel was completed in 1795 and has been used continually ever since.

This site is a California Historic Landmark (visit link) and part of Monterey State Historic Park. Check out my website (visit link)
