Chiang Mai is the fifth largest city of the Kingdom of Thailand, a tourist town, and an interesting place to visit (the latter two are not always identical). As you might expect, the bus terminal for the city is similarly large. This station is annoying located out of the city, ~5kms to the east of the inner city (the 'old city, surrounded by a moat and walls). This requires negotiating with the local drivers for a bus, bike or tuk tuk into the city. I suggest no more than 100 bath ($3). If you go to the trouble of walking out of the station area, to the rear of the station, you will come to a group of red, small local buses, who will charge you 60 baht for the same service.
The station: the station is larger than most in Thailand, possibly larger than any apart from the big three in Bangkok (waymarked). It is a long rectangular structure, with bus bays around (33 at my count), at the far end of the station there are two round parking areas, and with lots of shops and ticket counters. There is a goodly amount of English spoken here by the ticket agent staff, as you would expect with the sizeable quantity of tourists who meander through. From here buses depart to the Bangkok, to the neighbouring provinces, to Laos and Mynamar, and to the towns and villages within the province. A busy place.
