This lake can be very large or very small depending on how much snow there is on the surrounding mountains. Badwater is the home of the Amargosa River destination. It starts in northwest nevada and moves it way to badwater basin in Death Valley where it ends. (This is Badwater Basin) Most of the year, it is dried up. When it does, it leaves behind beautiful salt crystals on the bottom of Badwater basin. There are signs that say be carful because some of them are really sharp. When I was here, there was a little pond at 282 feet below sea level. This is because of all the little rain California had this winter. This is what is left of the Amargosa River. Most of the river is under ground except for the last few miles when it comes up and drains into the Badwater Basin. Please respect the signs that say flash flood and no swimming. DO NOT GO IN THE WATER!! There are endangered snail that are only found here and you may cut yourself on the salt flats.
