Oliver Postgate was the creator of some of the best loved children's television programs ever made. During the 1960's and 70's he gave us the likes of Ivor The Engine, Noggin The Nog, Bagpuss and my all time favourite, The Clangers. In collaboration with Peter Firmin, they made the programs in their studio, a former an old cowshed near Preston in Kent. In an age before computer wizardry, on a shoe-string budget, Oliver and Peter's work were shot as single frame animation. Peter did the artwork, Oliver wrote the scripts, did the filming along with most of the voices. They produced 2 minutes of 16mm film frame by frame animation a day, some 10 times as much as other animation studio's were producing.

Beneath the blue plaque is a wonderful mosaic of Major and Tiny Clanger, by local artist Martin Cheek and commissioned by Oliver's partner, Naomi Linnell.
