"Die Veste Heldburg ist eine hochmittelalterliche Höhenburg, die im 16. Jahrhundert zum Renaissanceschloss umgebaut wurde. Sie erhebt sich auf einem zum ehemaligen Vulkangebiet Heldburger Gangschar gezählten, 405 m hohen Vulkankegel über dem Ort Heldburg im südlichen Zipfel des Landkreises Hildburghausen in Thüringen. Im 12. oder 13. Jahrhundert gegründet, wird sie aufgrund ihrer exponierten Lage seit dem 14. Jahrhundert auch „Fränkische Leuchte“ genannt, als Pendant zur „Fränkischen Krone“, der in Sichtweite befindlichen Veste Coburg." wikipedia

The fortress Heldburg is a highly medieval hilltop castle converted in the 16th century into a renaissance castle. It stands on a former volcanic area on a 1329ft high volcanic cone above the town Heldburg in the southern corner of the district of Hildburghausen in Thuringia. Founded in the 12th or 13th century it is since the 14th century due to its exposed position called the "Frankish light", as the counterpart of the "Franconian Crown" located within sight of the fortress Coburg. wikipedia
