This monument was designed by Sir Aston Webb R.A., and is one of three constructed in the memory of almost 2,000 men the Dover Patrol lost during the Great War. The other monuments are across the Channel at Cap Gris Nez, France, and by Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
The foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught, KG on 10th November 1919 and the memorial was unveiled by HRH the Prince of Wales KG on 27th July 1921
On the 23 April 1918, the DOVER PATROL launched the famous attack on Zeebrugge to try and seal the German U-boats in their home port. This was one of the most famous and daring exploits of the First World War. The raid aimed to block the canal by sinking ships in the entrance. Unfortunately there were heavy losses when they attacked the heavily-defended Mole.
