Um anspruchsvolles und unterhaltsames Sprech- oder Musik-Theater zu erleben, muss man nicht unbedingt in die Kulturmetropolen fahren. Im Städteviereck Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel und Neumünster liegt die kleine Industriestadt Wahlstedt, in der der 1975 gegründete Kulturring Wahlstedt und Umgebung e.V. seit 35 Jahren ehrenamtlich das Kleine Theater am Markt betreibt.
Der ehemalige Bürgermeister Rudolf Gußmann war es, der Anfang der siebziger Jahre der Wahlstedter Stadtvertretung im Rahmen der Stadtkernsanierung vorschlug, mit Städtebauförderungsmitteln und mit Mitteln aus dem Sonderkonjunkturprogramm ein altes Kino zu einem voll funktionsfähigen Theater mit 392 Plätzen, einer Mittelbühne und einem großen Orchestergraben umzubauen, sodass in diesem Theater von der Oper über das Musical und die Operette bis zum Schauspiel, Konzert und Ballett alle Sparten zu Hause sein können.

To experience challenging and entertaining speech or music-theater, you do not necessarily go into the cultural metropolises. In quadrangle cities of Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel and Neumünster is the small industrial town Wahlstedt, founded in 1975, in the ring Wahlstedt cultural association of the area volunteer operates in 35 years, the Little Theatre on the market.
