There has been a lighthouse at this location since 1730 and during most of this time it was manned by the Knott family. This lighthouse has some good history attached to it. The lighthouse was used to warn passing ships of the Goodwin sands that lie just offshore.

In 1875 the lighthouse was using carbon arc lamps powered by a steam driven magneto (A magneto is an electrical generator that uses permanent magnets to produce alternating current)

Also, it was used by Guglielmo Marconi during his work on radio waves, receiving the first ship-to-shore message from the East Goodwin lightship.

The South Foreland Lighthouse is also one of the landmarks mentioned in the British sea shanty "Spanish Ladies".

This lighthouse was put into retirement in 1988, and is now looked after by the National Trust.
