Jezero a lidé:

Glacial lakes of the Sumava

  • Eight glacial lakes are located in the Šumava mountains. On the Czech side of the mountain range we can found Cerné lake, Certovo lake, Plešné lake, Prášilské lake and Laka lake. In Bavaria there is Kleiner Arbersee lake, Grosser Arbersee Lake and Rachelnsee lake.

  • All of these lakes originated from the last ice age. At that time (about 10 000 years ago) the eleven glaciers modeled slopes of the Šumava. These glaciers created kettle holes and moraines.

  • Initially the ten lakes were in Šumava but two of them have ceased to exist.

  • In the twentieth century industrial exhalations resulted in the acidification of water in lakes. For this reason fish in the lakes became exctinct. At present, the water pH is slowly increased.

Laka lake

Geography of the lake:

  • Lake covers an area of 2.8 hectares and is the smallest tarn of Sumava. Perimeter of the bank is 870 m, so paradoxically it is larger than perimeter of Prášilské lake.

  • Maximal depth of the lake does not exceed 4 meters.

  • The lake holds 40,000 cubic meters of water.

  • The lake lies in kettle at a height of 1096 meters. Laka lake is the highest situaded lake in Šumava mountains and aslo the highest situated lake in the Czech Republic.

  • Catchment area of the Laka is 135 ha. It is the largest cachtment area from the all lakes on the Czech side of the Šumava mountains. Only Grosser Arbersee lake in Bavaria has larger cachtment area.

Interesting things about the lake

  • The bottom consists of peat. The curiosity of the lake are the floating islands. This islands consist of a peat.

  • In case of Laka lake we can observe the process of natural extinction of glacial lake.

  • In 1906 part of the lake sediments was quarried.

The lake and peoples

  • The lake was previously used for breeding of trout.
